Have you ever wondered why dancers wear tights?
It isn't just because they look aesthetically pleasing, there is a much more sensible reason.
Have you ever sat with your legs together when it has been hot and they get all sweaty and want to stick together? Imagine trying to stand with your legs crossed and squeezed together then try to peel them apart to try to point your leg away from your body, trust me when I say it is not a nice feeling.
Now think about when you have been sitting on the floor when it is hot and you go to get up and your legs have stuck to the floor and there is a pile of sweat there!
Tights stop all this stickiness and mean our dancers can easily slide their legs away and toward their body and move in and out of the floor easily. This is one of the reasons, as well as ensuring appropriate coverage in leg extensions and splits training, that all our dancers are encouraged to wear tights to class and our students from Bronze Medal and above must wear tights.
Our air conditioning in the studio ensures students don't end up in a puddle on the floor and the only other alternative to stop the sweaty stickiness would be to wear pants and it is waaay too hot to consider that while dancing up a storm.
So if your dancer has mentioned they are starting to stick to the floor in jazz or contemporary or their legs are getting sweaty when they are standing in ballet it might be time to grab some tights and encourage them to wear them each week, you would be surprised at how quickly they become used to them and appreciate not being sticky!
